US tariffs are killing China's economy: Trump

AP-File-Trump

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the United States is "tariffing" China and as a result, the Asian giant's economy is not doing well.
"They (Chinese) are trying to catch us, and you know, one of the things I've done is, China had the worst year they've had in 27 years. They're not doing too well right now. We're tariffing them," Trump told cable channel C-Span, referring to the tariffs imposed by his administration on imported products from China.
"We're taking in many, many billions of dollars. I'm taking care of our farmers out of those tariffs because China hit them, as a way of retaliating against President Trump, and I said — I'll tell you — our farmers are great patriots," he said.
American farmers are getting impacted by the tariff war. Trump is trying to compensate them by rerouting the tariff money, claiming American farmers were the biggest beneficiaries of the tariffs.
Speaking to the ongoing talks with China, Trump said it is up to him to accept a trade deal.
"We cannot let China do what they've done to us over the last 25 years. They've taken hundreds of billions of dollars out of our country every single year, hundreds of billions with a "B," not millions, billions," he said.
Expressing confidence in reaching a trade deal with China, Trump said "tariffs are killing" the Chinese economy and companies were looking to move out of the Asian nation.

Chief Electoral Officer calls meeting on assembly polls in J&K

PTI6_30_2019_000154B

The process of holding elections in Jammu and Kashmir has been set in motion with chief electoral officer Shailendra Kumar officer convening a meeting to discuss the issue with district polls officers on August 2.
The meeting will discuss the verification programme that allows residents to verify their names in the voters list. It will also cover new registrations, changes in voter details and corrections in the voter ID cards, leading to an overall revision and purification of the electoral rolls of the state, a senior official said.
The meeting is happening in the wake of the BJP central leaders holding a meeting in Delhi on July 30, which was attended by former J&K deputy chief minister Kavinder Gupta, the party’s state president Ravinder Raina and spokesperson Ashok Koul.
The meeting discussed the assembly elections as well as the delimitation of the state (which has been barred by state assembly until 2026).
The BJP wants to lift the bar on delimitation by calling for amending the People’s Representation Act through the state’s governor, Satya Pal Malik. Constitutional experts believe the move would need a nod from the President and Parliament.
The BJP believes that delimitation would increase the number of seats in Jammu, which would help it offset the Kashmir region’s advantage in the number of seats of 46 against Jammu’s 37. The party believes that delimitation would allow them to need fewer seats to be able to form the government on their own.
The Election Commission of India has said that it will decide on the dates of the assembly polls in the state after the Amarnath Yatra ends on August 15.
J&K based parties, NC and PDP, have demanded that the election be held at the earliest in the state. The Congress also wants an early election in the state as it, like others, believes that the BJP is using the governor’s rule to brighten its chances of a better showing in the polls.
Governor’s rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir after the BJP pulled out of the coalition government with the PDP in June 2018. After the expiry of the six months governor rule, the state came under President’s rule, which was extended by six months in June.

Groundwater conservation policies fire up air pollution in northwest India

water-cycle-nature-conservation-nature-shut

The massive air pollution in Northwestern parts of India, which aggravates every winter, is linked to the efforts by farmers in the region to conserve ground water, according to a research carried out by a group of scientists from the US, Mexico  and India.
The study published in the latest issue of Nature Sustainability, reveals how water-use policies require farmers to transplant rice later in the year, which in turn delays harvests and concentrates agricultural burnings of crop residues in November a month when breezes stagnate  leading to increased air pollution.
The study, "Tradeoffs Between Groundwater Conservation and Air Pollution From Agricultural Fires in Northwest India," was a collaboration between researchers from Cornell and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT).
The participating scientists analysed groundwater conservation policies and their effect on the timing of farmers' planting and harvesting crops and burning crop residues. They also connected this information with meteorological and air pollution data, according to a media release issued by the Cornell University.
"This analysis shows that we need to think about sustainable agriculture from a systems perspective, because it's not a single objective we're managing for  it's multidimensional, and solving one problem in isolation can exacerbate others , said Andrew McDonald, associate professor of soil and crop sciences and a co-author of the paper.
Balwinder Singh, a cropping systems simulation modeler at CIMMYT in New Delhi, India, is the paper's first author. Amit Srivastava at CIMMYT in New Delhi and Bruno Gerard at CIMMYT in Mexico City are the other two co-authors of the study.
Northwest India suffers from two critical sustainability issues: air pollution and groundwater depletion, the study said. Almost 1.1 million Indians died from air pollution in 2015, adding up to costs equaling 3 percent of the country's gross domestic product, according to the study.
Groundwater depletion is an ongoing issue, and rice cultivation is particularly water-intensive. News reports in June shed light on water scarcity in Chennai, in the south; in the northwest, two groundwater conservation measures enacted in 2009 delayed groundwater use by farmers until later in the season. The acts ultimately prohibited transplanting rice into paddies until after June 20, the study said.
"Farmers must quickly clear residues immediately following rice harvests in this area, known as India's bread basket, to prepare fields for planting wheat that grows in the winter," it added.
Scientists recommend that solutions could include new agronomic technologies such as the tractor-mounted Happy Seeder, a device that allows farmers to drill through heavy crop residues and plant seeds without burning. They might couple such advances with shorter-duration rice varieties that offer flexibility in planting and harvesting dates.
Other options include investigating alternative uses for crop residues, such as collecting and selling biomass for power generation, bio-char creation, or as material for paper or furniture, the university said the statement.

Yediyurappa wins trust vote, House nod for finance bills

Siddaramaiah-speaks-trust-vote-Karnataka-Assembly-PTI

On Monday, Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa won the trust vote in the Karnataka Assembly by voice vote. While opposition parties did not seek a division of votes, they did try to corner the government over the finance bills.
With the Assembly strength reduced to 207 following the disqualification of 17 rebel MLAs (including three from the JDS), the BJP has a clear majority with 105 seats, just one more than the majority mark of 104. Moreover, it also has the support of one independent MLA from Mulbagilu, H. Nagesh.
Opposition parties were keen to see the financial bill cleared before July 31, failing which the entire administrative machinery would come to a standstill. Though the Congress party decided to support the finance bill like its ally JDS, it registered protest against Yediyurappa being sworn in as the chief minister despite not having the majority.
Congress legislature party leader Siddaramaiah dubbed the trust vote as "immoral and unconstitutional".
"BJP claims that they formed the government as per people's wish. I feel sorry that Yediyurappa never became CM with people's mandate. In 2008, BJP won only 110 and in 2018 again, they won only 104. To be sworn in as the CM, you needed 113, which you never had. This time, you needed 111 to prove majority, but had only 105, when you staked claim to form the government (as rebels). But you had only 105. I oppose the trust vote, as it is unconstitutional and immoral," said Siddaramaiah.
Former chief minister H. D. Kumaraswamy took exception to Yediyurappa stating that the administration during the coalition rule was a failure. "I urge him to substantiate his claim with documentary evidence. We will not try to destabilise your government. I want you to frame the rules for the debt relief act passed by me just before stepping down as the chief minister. It will benefit the poor who are in the clutches of private moneylenders," said Kumaraswamy, adding that many of their MLAs were still being pressurised to resign by the BJP.
"Today, you have grabbed power due to conspiracy. You must thank the rebels.
I know how you are pressurising our other MLAs. Please stop it. Let them be in the opposition benches at least. Let them not end up on the streets like other (disqualified) rebels," charged Kumaraswamy.
The Karnataka Appropriation Bill 2019 was passed along with demands for grants for 2019-2020, though Siddaramaiah suggested that Yediyurappa should take approval for the entire eight months that are pending rather than seek vote on account till October 31. However, the bills were passed unanimously.
Once again, when the chief minister tabled supplementary estimates aggregating to Rs 3,327 crores, the opposition parties raised objections and suggested that there was no hurry and that it warrants a discussion.
When Yediyurappa defended his tabling the supplementary budget saying he would be unable to spend a single penny for drought relief if the bill is not cleared, Siddaramaiah hit back saying that he was not aware of the nature of the demands.
Strangely, JDS members G.T. Devegowda and Bandeppa Kashempur came to Yediyurappa's rescue stating the supplementary budget should be passed as it was not a new one but what Kumaraswamy had proposed earlier. Siddaramaiah finally yielded and the bill was passed.
During the discussion, Siddaramaiah drew the attention of the House saying Yediyurappa had not kept his word.
"Yediyurappa says he will not indulge in vindictive politics but has given instructions to halt all the constituency projects and programmes of the previous government. This is not the right way," said Siddaramaiah.
Another MLA, Balakrishna, seconded this, saying that all the works approved in July by the coalition government had been stalled.
Later in the day, the finance bill was passed in the Upper House too.
The Assembly has been adjourned till Wednesday, till the new Speaker is elected. Deputy Speaker Krishna Reddy has called for nominations to the post before Tuesday afternoon.

VP Naidu breaks down as Rajya Sabha mourns death of Jaipal Reddy

PTI7_28_2019_000188A

Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu on Monday broke down as he read out an obituary reference for his old friend and former union minister S Jaipal Reddy, saying he was pained by his death.
When the House met for the day, Naidu read out an obituary reference for Reddy, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 77.
Reddy, who represented the state of Andhra Pradesh in the Upper House for two terms—from April 1990 to April 1996 and from September 1997 to March 1998—was a union minister holding different portfolios during 1997-98 and 2004-14, he said.
"In passing away of Shri S Jaipal Reddy, the country has lost a veteran parliamentarian, an outstanding orator and an able administrator," he said. Recalling his personal association with Reddy in a choking voice, Naidu recalled that they used to sit on the same bench of Andhra Pradesh assembly when the two were members. "Reddy was a friend, senior and guide because he was six years senior to me," he said, adding the House deeply mourns the death of its former member.
MPs stood in their places for a moment as a mark of respect to the memory of the departed soul.
When members took their place, Naidu said Andhra Pradesh Assembly used to meet at 8 am in those days and he and Reddy would often meet over breakfast at 7 in the morning to discuss issues. "The amount of knowledge, depth of understanding and mastery of language, both English and Telugu and some Urdu, is really remarkable," he said as he attempted to hide his emotions.
"It is really painful that he has left us," he said. Wiping his tears, Naidu said he was sorry he could not control his emotions. "I am sorry I cannot control my emotions because of 40 years of association."

Unnao case accident: Survivor's kin begins protest; UP govt seeks CBI probe

Unnao protest

The family of the Unnao rape survivor, who was critically injured in a road accident, on Tuesday began a protest outside the the King George's Medical University in Lucknow, where she is being treated.
The survivor had alleged in 2018 that BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar had raped her. After weeks of nationwide protests, Sengar was arrested in the case in April 2018.
Two aunts of the Unnao survivor died of injuries sustained when the car they were travelling in to Rae Bareli was hit by a truck on Sunday. The survivor and her lawyer were critically injured and placed on ventilator support on Monday evening, according to hospital authorities.
On Tuesday morning, news agency ANI reported that the Unnao rape survivor's family had commenced a protest outside the King George's Medical University demanding the punishment of Kuldeep Singh Sengar “as soon as possible”.
The family also wanted the release of the survivor's uncle, Mahesh Singh. Singh was convicted earlier in the month for assaulting Kuldeep Singh Sengar's brother. On Monday, the Unnao rape survivor's mother had told mediapersons she believed there was a “conspiracy” to wipe out the family to derail the case against Sengar.
Meanwhile, local media reports claim the survivor's family has refused to conduct the last rites of one of her aunts who died in the Sunday accident. The family are demanding the release on parole of Mahesh Singh for the funeral.
Political protests
The opposition Congress announced it would stage a sit-in-protest outside the BJP office in Lucknow over the Unnao case accident. Congress activists had launched an all-night protest outside the Gandhi Statue near the General Post Office. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is expected to visit the Unnao survivor's family later on Monday.
Govt seeks CBI probe
On Monday night, the Uttar Pradesh government recommended a CBI probe into the road accident on Sunday that left the Unnao rape survivor critically injured. Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said in a statement that a formal request for it has been sent to the Government of India.
"The government has decided to refer the investigation of case crime number 305/2019 u/s 302/307/506/120 B IPC PS Gurbuxganj Distt Raebareli to the CBI. A formal request has been sent to Government of India in this regard," he said.

Hong Kong braces for new rally after fresh clashes

Hong Kong braces for new rally after fresh clashes

Protesters in Hong Kong are planning another big rally later on Sunday, a day after police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at activists who gathered to protest an attack by suspected triad gang members at a train station last weekend.
Suspected pro-government triad gangs, about 100 men wearing white shirts, stormed the Yuen Long mass-transit station and thrashed pro-democracy demonstrators last Sunday as they marched through central Hong Kong and defaced China's Liaison Office―the main symbol of Beijing's authority. At least 45 people were injured in the violence.
Several activists attempted to hold a banned rally near the border with China on Saturday. Riot police fired tear gas as protesters hurled rocks during the violent clash. Eleven arrests have been made, police said. Hospital authorities said that 24 people were injured, with two in serious condition.
Another rally has been planned on Sunday afternoon. The latest clash compounds the political crisis engulfing the city's pro-Beijing leadership who are seemingly unable, or unwilling, to end the chaos.
Hong Kong was plunged into crisis after millions of people took to the streets, demanding the scrapping of the extradition billthat would allow its citizens to be sent to mainland China for trial. The former British colony has seen violent protests in the past few weeks between demonstrators and the police. Protesters are now calling for democratic reforms and also seeking independent inquiries into police use of force and the resignation of Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam.
Beijing has condemned the violence, but has left it to the city's semi-autonomous government to deal with the situation.
Hong Kong leader Lam had agreed to suspend the extradition bill, but tensions are yet to subside.

Khaleda Zia seeks bail in graft case on health grounds

Khaleda Zia seeks bail in graft case on health grounds

Bangladesh's ex-premier and opposition BNP chief Khaleda Zia on Sunday filed a petition in the High Court seeking bail on medical grounds in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case in which she was jailed for seven years.
In the petition, Zia said she was suffering from several health problems, including diabetes and dental issues, the Daily Star reported.
The 73-year-old three-time former prime minister also argued that since she has already served two-and-a-half years in jail in the case, she deserves the bail.
A high court bench of Justices Obaidul Hassan and SM Kuddus Zaman will hear her bail petition on Tuesday, the report said.
A Dhaka court on October 29 last year sentenced Zia to seven years of imprisonment in the corruption case.
She is also undergoing a 10-year jail term in a corruption case in connection with the embezzlement of 21 million taka (about USD 250,000) in foreign donations meant for the Zia Orphanage Trust, named after her late husband Zia ur Rahman, a military ruler-turned-politician.
The BNP chief has been admitted to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University since April 1 for treatment after spending more than a year in the Dhaka's century-old jail, where she was the only prisoner.

Indian-origin man found guilty of money fraud in US

arrest_times_square

A 39-year-old Indian-origin IT consultant in the US has been found guilty of running a fraud multimillion-dollar kickback scheme and faces a minimum of 20 years in prison.
New Jersey-based Shivanand Maharaj was convicted on charges of wire fraud and giving kickbacks to influence the operation of an employee benefit plan, which carry a sentence of at least 25 years' imprisonment.
He will be sentenced in December, said United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Geoffrey Berman.
Maharaj's co-conspirator Enrico Rubano, who was director of information technology at a large union pension and health benefit fund, pled guilty in connection with the same crimes shortly before the trial.

"For years, Shivanand Maharaj bribed an insider at a pension and health fund to approve hundreds of invoices for information technology work that was never done at all. He now stands rightly convicted for depriving hardworking individuals out of millions of dollars of health and retirement benefits," Berman said.
According to allegations contained in the indictment and evidence presented during the trial in Manhattan federal court, from 2009 through 2015, Rubano was the co-head of information technology for the fund had the authority to approve the payment of invoices from third-party vendors.
Beginning in at least 2009, and continuing through 2015, Maharaj and Rubano devised a scheme in which three different companies Maharaj owned or controlled submitted to the funds invoices for millions of dollars in information technology services that were never performed or that had been performed by employees of the funds or other vendors.
Rubano, in his position as co-head of information technology, approved these fraudulent invoices and received kickbacks from Maharaj, who by submitting hundreds of invoices and recruiting another co-conspirator to receive additional criminal proceeds, fraudulently received in excess of USD 2 million through this scheme.

Indian firms vow to limit CO2 emissions in line with UN climate ambition

co2-carbon-emission-nature-carbob-footprint-shut

Three Indian companies are among the 28 global firms that have committed to a new level of climate ambition in line with the global goal to limit temperature rise to 1.5C and reach net-zero carbon emissions, ahead of the UN Climate Action Summit expected to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The commitment of the companies comes after the most recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which warned of catastrophic consequences should global warming exceed 1.5C.
The historic call-to-action issued in June came in the form of an open letter addressed to business leaders and signed by 25 global leaders, including President of the UN General Assembly Mara Fernanda Espinosa Garces, Co-Founder of Global Optimism Christiana Figueres and SDG Advocate Paul Polman, Co-Founder of IMAGINE.
Hyderabad-based Banka BioLoo, Dalmia Cement Ltd and Mahindra group along with 25 other companies, representing a total capitalization of USD 1.3 trillion, are stepping up to set a new level of climate ambition in response to a call-to-action campaign ahead of the UN Climate Action Summit on September 23.
Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend the Summit on the margins of the high-level UN General Assembly session in September.
The UN Secretary-General has called on leaders to come to the Climate Action Summit in September with clear plans for major cuts to emissions on the pathway to a zero-net emissions economy by 2050, Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Climate Action Summit, said.
It is very encouraging to see these climate leaders in the global business community taking action. By sending strong market signals, these companies are showing governments that they need to urgently ramp up their national plans in line with the latest climate science, Alba said.
The other companies include Hewlett Packard Enterprise, BT, Levi Strauss & Co., SAP, Unilever, Vodafone Group and Zurich Insurance, collectively representing over one million employees from 17 sectors and more than 16 countries.
Of these companies, BT, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Levi Strauss & Co. and SAP already have 1.5C-aligned reduction targets covering greenhouse gas emissions from their operations.
"Climate leadership has never been more important than it is right now, and it is inspiring to see so many diverse companies and brands boldly raising their ambitions, Lise Kingo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact, said.
Leading companies are already proving that 1.5C-compliant climate targets are possible, and I encourage all businesses to seize this opportunity to position themselves at the forefront of this movement and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, Kingo said.
According to a press statement by the UN, the companies raising the bar for corporate climate ambition are committed to setting science-based targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which independently assesses corporate emissions reduction targets against the latest climate science.
To date, 600 of the world's largest businesses are setting science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets aligned with the Paris Agreement.
In April 2019, the SBTi released new target validation resources to enable companies to set targets consistent with 1.5C.
The science is clear: To limit the catastrophic impacts of climate change, we must ensure warming does not exceed 1.5C. The ambition is high, but it's achievable  and science-based targets give companies a roadmap for getting there, Paul Simpson, SBTi Board Member, said.
We urge all companies to seize this chance to align their business with a 1.5C future and drive forward the transition to a net-zero carbon economy, Simpson said.
CEOs who commit their companies to a 1.5C trajectory in support of a net-zero future will be recognized at the UN Global Compact's Private Sector Forum as part of the UN Climate Action Summit on September 23.
According to WHO, each year, air pollution causes 7 million premature deaths, of which 600,000 are children.
As per the World Bank, air pollution costs the global economy an estimated USD 5.11 trillion in welfare losses and in the 15 countries with the highest greenhouse gas emissions, health impacts of air pollution are estimated to cost more than 4 per cent of GDP.

Second orbit raising manoeuvre of Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft performed: ISRO

chandrayaan-2-bhanu22719

India's ambitious second lunar mission Chandrayaan-2 has successfully raised its orbit around the Earth for the second time early on Friday, taking the spacecraft one step closer to the Moon, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.
The 15-minute Earth-bound manoeuvre was carried out at 1.08 am using the spacecraft's on-board propulsion system, the space agency said in a statement here.
According to ISRO officials, Earth bound orbit is a phase during which the spacecraft will remain in the Earth's sphere of influence.
With the latest manoeuvre, Chandrayaan-2 has been pushed to an orbit with a perigee—nearest point to Earth—of 251 kilometres (km) and an apogee—farthest point to the Earth—of 54,829 km, it said.
On the day of launch on July 22, the spacecraft was injected into an elliptical Earth orbit with a perigee of 169.7 km and an apogee of 45,475 km and this was further raised in the first manoeuvre on Wednesday.
ISRO said all the parameters of the spacecraft were normal and the third orbit raising manoeuvre will be performed on July 29.
In a giant leap for the country's ambitious low-cost space programme, ISRO's most powerful three-stage rocket GSLV-MkIII-M1 had launched the spacecraft into the orbit of the Earth on July 22 from the spaceport of Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
The agency has planned a total of 15 orbit raising manoeuvres before the 3,850 kilogramme (kg) three-module Chandrayaan-2 comprising an orbiter, lander and rover is brought around the Moon, which is at a distance of nearly four lakh kms from the Earth.
The Earth-bound manoeuvres will culminate into "Trans Lunar Insertion", scheduled on August 14, and a week later "Lunar Orbit Insertion" will take place when the spacecraft will start revolving around the Moon.
According to ISRO, after 13 days of Moon-bound orbit phase, the lander 'Vikram' carrying rover 'Pragyan' will separate and after another few days of orbiting will soft land on September 7 in the South Pole region of the Moon, where no country has gone so far, according to the ISRO.
If successful, the mission will make India the fourth country after Russia, the US and China to pull off a soft landing on the Moon.
The orbiter carries eight scientific payloads for mapping the lunar surface and study the exosphere (outer atmosphere) of the Moon while the lander carries three scientific payloads to conduct surface and subsurface science experiments.
The rover carries two payloads to enhance the understanding of the lunar surface. A passive experiment from NASA will also be carried onboard Chandrayaan-2, ISRO has said.

WhatsApp has assured action to trace rogue messages, says government

whatsapp-afp

The government on Friday told WhatsApp to develop a mechanism to trace origin of messages when the app is found to be abused by terrorists and extremists, and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad asserted that the platform has assured prompt action in such cases.
"On the issue of traceability, I have conveyed to them traceability shall be their job. But in the event WhatsApp platform is sought to be abused by rogue (elements), terrorists and extremist elements by repeating, recirculation of messages, then there must be a mechanism where those could be traced to enforce law and order, safety and security of the country," Prasad said after meeting WhatsApp Global Head Will Cathcart.
The meeting comes at a time when the messaging platform faces pressure from India to bring in traceability of fake message originators.
"This I have told them clearly, the mechanism shall be developed by them. And request for that will also come from appropriately high level so that there is no tinkering in between," Prasad said.
Prasad said the WhatsApp head has assured action in these matters.
Post the meeting with the minister, Cathcart said WhatsApp has reiterated its support for encryption and how important it is for the product.
The company is focussed on making changes to its product to deal with virality like forward limits that it had set on its messages, he added.
"We talked about the work we are doing to cooperate with law enforcement, put in place training, and handle requests," he said.

Virat Kohli to skip press conference: Is Rohit Sharma rift to blame?

kohli-west-indies-reuters

The alleged rift between the captain and vice-captain of the Indian cricket team may have just intensified, with skipper Virat Kohli opting to avoid Monday’s pre-series press conference, as the boys in blue gear up to play a series of matches with the West Indies.
Virat Kohli, who is alleged to be at odds with Rohit Sharma, will be skipping the conference traditionally held before the start of a major series. ANI reported a BCCI source saying, “There will be no pre-departure press conference by the Indian team leaving for the West Indies. There is no window for a press conference ahead of the departure. We tried but it was not possible.”
Earlier, multiple news reports suggested that Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma were having a rift with Rohit Sharma and his family. These reports have been denied by the BCCI, but were fuelled by leaks from the dressing room and some slightly cryptic social media behaviour.
In early July, it was decided that the Indian captain Virat Kohli and the team coach Ravi Shastri would be in charge of deciding the travel schedule of Wives and Girlfriends (WAGs). Given that Kohli is married, this was criticized as a case of conflict of interest, but the decision stood nonetheless.
During the World Cup, news reports suggested that a “senior member” of the Indian team had flouted the rule allowing no more than 15 days of permissible stay with a wife or girlfriend. The player had requested permission to extend the duration of stay, which the Committee of Administrators (CoA) denied. But, the player then went on to flout the rule for the entirety of the seven-week period of the World Cup. It is unknown as to who this player was.
Following India’s loss, a video circulated of Rakhi Sawant blaming Kohli and Sharma for treating the World Cup like a honeymoon.
According to the rumours, neither Kohli nor Sharma sides have interacted since the World Cup semifinal at Manchester. At the time, Sharma had posted on Twitter, “We failed to deliver as a team when it mattered, 30 minutes of poor cricket yesterday & that snatched away our chance for the cup. My heart is heavy as I’m sure yours is too. The support away from home was incredible. Thank you all for painting most of UK blue wherever we played in.”
Dainik Jagran had reported a split in the Indian dressing room following the match against New Zealand, with players unhappy over favouritism in the team and an alleged talking-down that the bowlers received.
It is a rift that has not yet erupted over social media, so far, with the only sign of disharmony being Rohit Sharma ‘unfollowing’ Anushka Sharma on Instagram. In turn, Anushka posted a cryptic message on her Instagram Stories, stating, “A wise man once said nothing. Only truth can shake hands with silence in a mess of false appearances.” Both Kohli and Anushka continue to follow Rohit.
BCCI officials have denied the presence of any rift, with the Committee of Administrators telling the media “These are all stories created by you guys,” according to PTI. The CoA have also denied rumours of the BCCI mulling split-captaincy, where Kohli would be put in charge of tests and Sharma for limited-overs.
India will play three T20s with the West Indies, on August 3, 4 and 6. This will be followed by three ODIs on August 8, 11, and 14 and two tests between August 22-26 and August 30 and September 3.

BCCI confirms Kohli will hold press conference before Windies tour

The BCCI has put to rest speculations that Virat Kohli would not be attending a press conference on Monday prior to the Indian team's tour of the West Indies. In a press release, the BCCI has stated that Kohli would address the pre-departure press conference at 6:00 pm IST on Monday, in Mumbai.
ANI had earlier reported that Kohli would not be attending the press conference, prompting speculation that this was because he wanted to avoid fielding questions on the alleged rift between him and vice-captain Rohit Sharma.
Earlier, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) had stated that there was no such rift between Kohli and Sharma.  But, speculation rose after Sharma unfollowed Kohli's wife, Anushka Sharma, on Instagram. Anushka, in turn, uploaded a cryptic Instagram story saying, "A wise man once said nothing. Only truth can shake hands with silence in a mess of false appearances."
India are set to play West Indies in all three formats, with three T20s scheduled on August 3, 4 and 6, followed by three ODIs on August 8, 11, and 14 and two tests on August 22 and September 3 respectively. Two of the T20 matches will be played in the United States in Florida, while the remaining matches will be held in the West Indies.
Virat Kohli will lead the Indian team in all formats. Shikhar Dhawan will return to the squad, following his recovery from a thumb fracture. Also returning from injury is Wriddhiman Saha, who has not played since January of 2018, following a shoulder surgery undertaken to heal an injury he sustained in the 2018 IPL. Mahendra Singh Dhoni will not be playing as he has joined the Territorial Army for three months. Rahul Chahar will be the only new face in the squad. Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah will be rested, though Bumrah will be playing in the test matches.
